Am I losing my faith?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Lately, I’ve been wondering if, since I was force fed my parent’s religion, I’ve bought into something that isn’t entirely accurate. Does anyone know any good books or websites that discuss/compare different religions from around the world?

what u can do is go onto google.com put in all the religions that you know press enter and info should pop up about them. or you can also put the difference between two religions. For ex: What’s the difference between Muslims and Christians?

    Do it all the time

Type Comparative Religions into a search engine. There are lots of sites out there. The link below is a list of books that Amazon.com sells on the subject. Reading the reviews on each might give you some idea which would best suit your needs.

i don’t think anyone has the perfect answer with regards to the ‘accuracy’ of religion. religion is man-made. spirituality is personal and collective and extends beyond doctrine. are u sure you were ‘force-fed’? what about your own spiritual experiences? can you claim any of them as to your own – or real / accurate / legitimate to you? what from all you know, are you now wanting to reject? maybe a spring clean IS in order and maybe this is a part of your own maturing.

i think it is a life long journey to develop your relationship with god. it is normal and human to have doubts. open discussions with others and inspirational books (of any religion / spiritual source) will help you continue to develop spiritually – and that might mean (in the end / or along the way) not ascribing to any one dogma or set of beleifs at all. it is YOUR conscience alone.

i think above all it is important to honour your quest / searching. give it time and patience. – and i wish you wisdom / insight and joy throughout.

Have faith to God and God will have trust in you. The truth cannot be forced. If so, the truth will do no good to anyone. I think with little source will have your answer answered. Let’s compare the core of a religion. Compare your religion’s core component with the religion of your parents. Relate it with all elements you know. Remember, a true religion is the most universal not in divinity only. Use your knowledge and experience wholefully. The best religion never hurts mankind in any elements, ever. The best religion brings true happiness to hearts of its faithful. Nonetheless, honesty is the best policy. Try speaking to your parents to accept the truth even it is bitter. It is normal to have mistakes. God is the Most Forgiving. Never stop having faith to the Almighty because if you believe in Him, you have to believe in His Might without a single drop of doubt.

A true religion never commands to neglect their followers’ parents who are not in the same religion. God knows what best to His creature.

(About two weeks after posting my first answer)
How are you now? Still clinging to your faith or have you considered a new one?
I am sorry if my answer did not help at all. I did not really understand the true feelings of being force fed. Now I know a little bit of it.
I am here just to tell you to summarize all the answers you have received yet. What a heart-warming feeling to know that a lot of people are a caring lot. Rebrush again your thinkings of their answers and think wholefully. Think wholefully without dropping out anything.
Imagine you are equating a mathematical puzzle. What will happen if you forgot to include a digit or mistype the equation formula. You will get a wrong answer, right?
Remember that always. May you find your way to the true path.

  • Susan Gregory says:

You can study other religions, but the more important seeking is that of the Truth. After many years of studying other religions, I found the truth to be in Jesus Christ (not Christians and not the church — so many have disgraced the true teachings of Christ). I encourage you to open your heart to God, in a sincere prayer ask him to show you the truth, and then read the Gospel of John in the Bible. Choose a translation that is easy to read, such as the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV). As you read it, focus on learning about whom Christ is and his character. There you truly will find the Way, the Truth, and the Light.

When God created the world, and after man’s fall into sin, He established a say to reconcile with him. That was through a blood sacrifice. All the religions that believe there is only one God agree with this point. Blood sacrifices (usually lambs, goats, birds, etc.) presented in the temples by the priests for the people enabled them to be forgiven for their sins and reconciled to God. When Christ died, he became the complete sacrifice enabling people to have free and open access to God in a way that humankind had never known. It is only with the blood of an unblemished human being that could open the door completely and allow us to have complete access to the one and only God.

It is this phenomenon that causes followers of Christ to be so excited and focused on their faith. Once you have experienced being in the presence of God and have him surround you with his love, you never want to give it up!

well, that question is only between you and God. It is true. I have been a Christian for 10 years and many times i feel like i am losing faith. But God is always near me and ready to help me. as it says in Hebrews 13;10 …”I will never leave thee nor forsake thee” What a great promise! I use the KJV because i have studied most Bibles and find that this one holds everything and doesn’t take anything out of the context. God bless! :)

Any religion can “force feed” into its children, if the parent takes their faith seriously. I don’t know what religion it was, but first step back and try to view the faith with your own perspective, and see if it has any basic value of its own. You may be happy in that faith. It was just the way your parents seem to present it to you, and you were probably weary, and didn’t feel like listening. I thought my parents had a boring religion, but after I was on my own for awhile, I redicovered it from my own perspective, and saw much good in it. People can present misinterpretations of any faith to others, because they put their own interpretation on things. Sometimes the chilren are going through a rebellious phase anyhow, and don’t want to obey. So then it is the rebellious attitude, not the parents. The best thing to do becfore you run off to another faith, and get indoctrinated by more human beings with fixed opinions, is to step back and re-examine what you have been taught. Look for the truth yourself, and get other opinions from others in your own faith. COnstruct your own perspective…

I know alot of people (myself included) who have been where you are. The best answer I can give is religion is not the answer, but Jesus is. I’m not saying religions are bad by any means, but you can spend the rest of your life studying different religions and never know Jesus. Or you can know Him right now. All you have to do is pray and invite Him into your heart. Be completely open, honest and sincere. Tell Him you want to know Him and the truth and ask him to reveal himself to you. Believe me he will. In fact the Bible says he is knocking at the door just waiting for you to open it and let him in. He desperately wants a personal relationship with you, but he is a gentleman. He will not force anything on anyone. It’s up to you to invite him in. When you do it will change your life forever!

Also as you continue to pray ask God to open up your heart and understanding for His Word (the bible). There are many bibles out there, many versions and there are also many study bibles and aides out there. I personally love KJV as I grew up with it, but I’ve found NIV alot easier to study. I’ve actually read both versions all the way through and I can say they do say the same thing (the words are slightly different, but there is no diference in the meaning, so you can use either one.

Also, be assured you are not losing your faith. It’s perfectly allright if you don’t agree with your parents’ religion or anyone elses. (Your parents may also be right, but its not about religion) The fact that you cared to ask this question even though you are in an unsure place right now proves you have alot of faith! Satan comes against us all (He even came against Jesus several times) and he will try to convince you you hae lost your faith or you have no hope. Trust me I’ve been there. It’s a lie from hell, but if he can convince you of that you will not try to seek God. Don’t believe the lie. God does want you more than you know. When you open up to him, he will fill your heart with joy and peace more than you can imagine. Then you will know for certain He’s real not becasue a church or someone else told you what to think, but because you invited Jesus into your heart, and He spoke the truth to you directly.

    Dear Lola,
Let me say that you are NOT losing your faith, in contrary you are losing family bonds that forced you, as you said. I don’t know what is your family’s religion, and I don’t want your feel of being “Forced” to make you disagree with your parent’s religion, though you may end up convinced with it. I respect your way of thinking Lola, because it’s the most important question ever!

Let may help you by asking you one question, tell you two hints, and refer you to three links;)

My question is:- “What is your definition of God & religion?”, you’ve to know what you want from a religion before starting your journey to God.

    My hints are:
    1) Look in scriptures in its original & authentic resources, don’t judge a religion by its followers, because we don’t judge medicine for example by the practice of doctors in certain society. Use an OBJECTIVE method for judgment, don’t rely on SUBJECTIVE methods, because though you may marry some on you really love “i.e. subjective”, but your mind will chose an honored, smart, promising and caring man “i.e. objective”.

    2) Beside reading religious books, I’d advise you to have a look of “convert stories” , to examine METHODS others used, and judge with your own mind.

Links: there are hundreds of links, you may spend your life searching & studying, but if you take this issue as a project, set an objective methodology, set milestones, goals, references, and for sure you’ll find what you want and deserve.

No you are not losing your faith you just have questions. Read the bible and pray about it. We all serve the same God and when we go to heaven God is not going to put us in groups of different denomenations. I go to a nondenomenational church and I know that dont answer your question like you wanted but maybe it will help you some how.

http://www.religioustolerance.org is a good source as well as the Religion & Ethics page of the http://www.bbc.com
Once on the page click Religion and it has some detailed information on a wide variety of religions. Those are the two that I’ve found to be the best and most accurate. (giving good answers on Paganism, Hinduism, and inclusive of some lesser known religions)
